I decided to enter the Westminster Kennel Club/Pratt dog art contest; this is entry 1 that I’ve completed. What I loved the most about painting this ‘Doe Eyed Yorkie’ piece is experimenting with the fur texture.
As you can see, the first layer was a bit of a struggle, I wanted to include the fur wrappers present in the reference image, yet it ended up not working out. I also made the fur too bloated and the ‘neck fur’ far too short.
In the next layer of paint, I discovered that the composition was a bit crooked, and the dimensions a bit off, so I sought to amend that.
Before I could begin embellishing the painted dog with my fav Golden iridescent bright gold paint, I needed to first ‘bring back’ the fur strokes that were unintentionally lost when I touched up the backdrop with a mixture of several dark acrylic paints: phthalo blue, ultramarine blue, cobalt green, cadmium, and alizarin crimson hue.
